the only gal on the Sheffield team facing the all-female foursome from Newham College, Cambridge. If I was her, I'd have my name changed by deed-poll.....her surname being 'Haw'.

Over to you with any surnames that you have come across that merit deed-poll change?

Haw sounds like ***
wh ore
oh you clearly pronounce *** as war ( or waugh).
Only works because the post-vocalic /r/ is very weak now in standard english ( lenition: rhotacism). father = farther
sorry - oops sozza very very technical explanation

haw sounds like *** ( leddy of the night, you know, leddy who sells her kisses to men for loo-lah) in the south. ( sarf)
note - v weak /r/

Clickety clok ( Aus) used to address me as Petah

[American /r/ has three flavours - a much stronger /r/ - Dr Carta in ER was Carrrrterrrrr. A velar flap ( no really) for an r in the middle of a word - possibly why the 'r' inside Dr Carter is different to the final. and finally a trilled r - a bit like lorra for lotta. All of which we dont really have]

I must not do this. I will be punished and deserve it. A mod will post some poncy one liner like " we dont take life this seriously on AB". Otheres will scream: not mimsy at all!
think of core with an 'h'
Nice to see the AB word-bot has found others posts not mimsy At ALL !
Worked with a Mrs Pratt. Think I would have kept the maiden name - Davidson.
Think it very much depends where you come from. The name Haw sounds just fine to Scottish ears - H + awe.
well actually MAggz I gonna point out
it doesnt work in the Norf, as it is hoooooorrrr

rhymes with English moor with a strong post-vocalic rrrrrrr
I worked with a Mike Hunt many years ago.
Probably piggy nose. And speaking of funny names . . er . . . ;-)
Well. I knew a Pigg, and I knew a Crapper.
Also a Penny Farthing, and a Tuppence Halfpenny.
We once knew A. Gay and I also worked in teaching with a Mr Daft. Another colleague always wrote his full name because otherwise he was F. King.
My daughter's friend's surname was Bratt.
//wh ore//
Years ago we knew a lady with the surname of Hoare and she was regularly asked if she was related to various members of a prominent family of that name. One evening, having imbibed a few g and t's she waved her arms about and declared, Darling, I'm related to all the Hoares in Gibraltar!
