I have just had a packet soup I had in the back of the cupboard and it was yummy, The sell by date on it was July 03.

Do you eat stuff out of sell buy, and what’s the oldest you have eaten ?

Gromit!
Yes, it was an expiry date...but you said it was a "sell by" date and I was pointing out that it wasn't.
well my dears
when my grandfather died, 1957 we went up to empty the house
and found tins in the outhouse which were over from the war - - the gassy ones were chucked out and we were fed the rest....

all of us still alive
yes, i would have eaten it (would i, really??) actually i dont know. If i had spotted it before i ate it i probably wouldnt have but if after, i wouldn't worry :)
I would use (and do) spices that were OOD for many years (i think my oldest spice i still use went ood in 1998)
I'd have eaten it so long as it wasnt a solid block (as I have had some go).

So long as it wasnt fresh meat or fish I dont have a problem. Nothing to do with saving anything I'm not exactly skint - I just hate waste.
//I wouldn't eat anything that mice have been at!//

Haha, you sound like Mrs YMB. We had a Roland get at the Weetabix, she threw them out even though there were some ok ones. She wont eat Weetabix now either. Tracked Roland down to under the kitchen cupboards brown bread next to the boiler. Was humming a bit.

Just had a second helping of the 20 year old soup :-)

Spices degrade and become less potent quite quickly. I try to renew the ones I use most, annually. I replenish mine from the Turkish market on holiday. But would quite happily use ground spice that are a few years old, if I had to.
I ate seven days out of date bacon. Boy did I pay for that mistake.

Not the Weetabix, I trust, YMB? ;o)
There were a lot of remnants of Weetabix and the white wrapper they come in round him. Weetabix probably killed him as I doubt he could find enough to drink. He was a fair sized Rattus norvegicus, not sure how he got in as my SiL and myself re-rendered all the outside and filled in any holes.
I've eaten bacon older than that, no problem.

Buy the seeds and grind them yourself. We get our from Makkah up the road, there are 3-4 other similar shops up there so dont need to go to Turkey.
Probably just ran in through an open door or window when no one was looking, YMB. Sneaky little varmint!
Probably, we used to have a couple of boxers - never had the problem then!
I don't take any notice of dates, I'll eat it if it's not off.
YMB, dogs are brilliant. I live in the country and haven't seen one big spider in my house this autumn. I think the dogs must be catching them.

i was reading the posts backwards and i thought you were referring to july 2003!

just in case people wonder

Pharaonic triticum ( King Tut's wheat silly) does NOT sprout. Internet meme that it does.

OK prepare to puke
POW camp, ma daydy had a meal where the meat was off, and I think he puked, and said "no more!"
Another POW leant over and asked if he cd have it, as he found it OK.

and WE thought as children that the fella was from a hunting family and so was used to eating high game....still ugh
What did we do before all the sell by dates started?Picked it up and either smelt it or looked at the colour.
