Flight booking question

I made a flight booking in february for a flight departing in december this year. The flight cost �800, and I paid a �60 deposit to a travel agent, with the full balance to paid on 30th September.

This week, I receive a phonecall from the travel agent stating that the full balance must be paid by 14th May, or I wont be able to get that price. Can they do this, as I have a valid booking and far off payment date (part of the reason i booked with them anyway)? Has this happened to anyone else before?

I was told this year that if I paid earlier than I expected to I would avoid a surcharge the airlines were about to put on as a fuel surcharge.

I trust my agent totally - he's been arranging visits for us for the last 10 years.

So yes would seem to be the answer. But check with the agent why he is asking for the money now.

i would pay it as the price of oil keeps going up,the airline will keep puting extra surcharges on for fuel,you might save �50/60 this way

I am not totally certain on the legal aspect but I believe you have reserved a seat by paying the deposit but not sealed the deal until you pay the full fare - although that seems rather harsh I think it is legally sound. The only way to avoid this trap is either to pay the full fare or else get the price fixed in writing, which airlines are most unlikely to do and therefore not the agents either. Not only fuel can vary in price but so can the assorted airport fees, the carrier's insurance components, etc.

Pay only if your agent is bonded, and they guarantee there will be no further charges.
Otherwise I do not think they are acting legaly.
You made a contract, they agreed to it, why should they change it now?

I agree, but I havent had a letter or email as a "final invoice", just a phone message. So, without either of those i am not paying.
