If you watch the Sweeney, London is teeming with wasteground, no doubt a legacy of WWII. How much of the capital is still like this?

not a lot... I think the last official bomb site was at Ludgate Circus, and that went years ago. They might have done some filming in Docklands, which was derelict until more recently
The Sweeney is from the seventies - you do realise that don't you?
The 70's it was indeed, and most of the filming was done out in the west of London around the Harrow Road and a lot in what became Docklands.

Postdog - yes, I know the show is from the 70's!
It's just that most of the locations, by accident or design, involve wasteground or crummy semi-derelict areas. I live on the south coast and am not overly familiar with London, apart from the Westend shopping areas. I wondered, as Top Gooner subsequently confirmed, if a lot of the filming of the programme was done in what is now the site of breadhead housing.
There's still a lot of areas that are wasteland but not to the extent of the docklands area.

Have a look at Derelict London http://www.derelictlondon.com/derelict_london_ com.htm Scroll down the page and there's loads of different categories. Very interesting website!
that is being built up now in time for the 2012 olympics which will overspill from Stratford to Greenwich - they already finishing train extension of DLR
