In my last supermarket delivery (a week ago), my order of Dates was substituted by an unripe Mango.

This latter shows no sign of ripening but the best before date is 11th December.

Is there any way I can stimulate it to ripen before it goes rotten ?

Mangos will continue to ripen at room temperature, becoming sweeter and softer over several days. To speed up ripening, place mangos in a paper bag at room temperature, and store for approximately 2 days or until the mangos are ripe.
I've given up ordering fruit with my online shopping. Bananas are the worse, one minute they are green and totally inedible and then they are all black and not very appetising looking.

Dates - Mangoes ... how did the picker manage to make that substitution?
I was going to suggest the paper bag treatment.
I thought the supermarkets were doing away with best before dates to cut down on food waste.
Bananas ripen well on my south facing window ledges
My order of a bag of white rice to help my dog recover was replaced with a single pack Iof spicy chilli rice!! Appently the packers don't choose. They get written instructions for substitutions!
Pickers, not packers.
Try putting it with bananas.

Apparently they give off a gas which speeds up ripening of other fruit.

From Whoom ?
Presumably an algorithm. I once got veal instead of venison - I concluded because they both begin with V.
As impatiens says Bazile. Computer generated.
I have had other weird substations. We do click and collect and often have a laugh with the staff about the substitutions.
If you think about it it would be chaotic if pickers decided on substitutions or had to look to find things that may out of stock.
Shouldn't be necessary. If you have specifically given permission for substitutes then management should have apponted a person of average intelligence or better to create a substitution list and keep it up to date. Then stupid substitutions should be a thing of the past. But the sensible thing would be to not agree to any substitutes in the first place. I trust they come and pick up unrequested goods and give a refund on request.

It’s all about the paper bag for mangoes. However, you can also try submerging your mango in a container of rice or popcorn kernels if you want to try something new. Whichever method you choose, your mango should be soft enough to eat in a about a day.

Thanks for all the responses - I've put it in a paper bag with a banana (only had one left) and will await developments.
