R I P. A great player.
A true legend. Probably the lowest point of his career came on these shores in '66 when he was unceremoniously kicked out of the tournament by some truly thuggish opposing defenders.
RIP
Pele was chopped to pieces in the game against Portugal in 1966. I think it was at Goodison Park. That fixture is the international equivalent of Celtic v Rangers, Utd v City etc. However, Pele was without doubt the best striker in the history of the game. He had a phenominal record of goal scoring. But he wasn't the greatest player. That accolade belongs to George Best. Best had it all. He could defend, tackle, dribble, beat a man, head the ball, pass the ball. Unfortunately for him, his international colleagues weren't good enough to get him to a World Cup. So, RIP Pele. The death of a legend.
Comparison is all down to opinion, 10c, and i respect yours. However, we, as a nation, saw footage of George Best on a weekly basis but we would normally only see Pele on our tv screens when the World Cup came around.
I prefer to think we of a certain age were lucky to have seen them both.
Thanks Ken. I turned down the offer of a ticket for that Goodison Park match because I preferred to go training for The Cloggers Arms! Tis true! I often laugh at that. Tickets for group matches in 1966 were more readily available in those days.
RIP Pele. A true legend and probably the best player I have ever seen. Sign of a truly great player is that they make it look so easy and simple and Pele made it look that way.
Sad news, he was a great player & a true sporting legend. Even people that don't follow football would know his name.

RIP Pele.
