I pre-ordered an innovative product about two years ago from a company who promised delivery upon 6 months or so as the product had to be produced first. They received my full payment back then. The producers send monthly "updates" which basically always say the same thing with different words and blame it all on China and the pandemic..... I do understand some consequences may be real but at this point it just sounds like an excuse to me. I'm wondering if there actually is a deadline they are legally entitled to hold or if they can just extend their expected delivery times forever and ever.

Just give up and ask for money back. Did you pay by credit card?
Are you in uk?
a bit of a risk paying for something that doesn't exist. Was there any specific reason for doing so (eg "We're only going to make 12 of these"?) Personally I'd do as bobb suggests, but if you're desperate to be first in line you'll just have to cross your fingers and wait.
It may allso depend on the contract you signed... the reference to inovative and not yet produced make's me wonder if this is not a usual type of transaction
‘ They received my full payment back then’

"a company who promised delivery upon 6 months or so"

I am not aware of a legal interpretation of, "or so" with regards to a deadline and your understanding of it might be more than a wee bit at odds with the company's understanding.
Have you checked with the next town over?

Their beanstalk may have been delivered first.
The law uses the term “reasonable” with things like this. Your case is unreasonable so you should claim for a full refund. I hope u paid by credit card but I do think you may be timed out in this! Two years is ridiculous and doubt you will see your money again or product but hope I am wrong!
