My parents got a credit card ONLY for use online. It has a really small credit limit, so if someone managed fraudulently to get their details, very little could be spent. If a bank or credit card company pays out money without your authorisation, they are liable to return the money to your account - so don't worry.
If, when you get to the payment page, a message pops up on your computer saying "this website may be unsecure", you may wish to telephone the company and complete your purchase by phone instead... it could be that the payment page has weak security and so hackers could gain access to your details. Please note though - this is very unlikely. E-business is worth millions of pounds a year because it is generally very safe and most people trust them and buy online!
As for payments in dollars (or Euros or Yen or any other currency for that matter!), charges will vary for each bank. If you are unsure, ask your bank!
Happy shopping!
