I once had a roadie called John Hurt. One evening his car got blocked in outside our house by an inconsiderate neighbour who had beggared off to the pub without a care in the world. We couldn't get our mate out from where he was parked, so we actually called the police (this was a long time ago). As soon as we told them our mate's name they arrived within about four minutes. They were disappoionted, but took out their dudgeon on the neighbour, who came tottering down the road on cue. Did you ever know an Albert Einstein, or a Paul McArtney or a Pablo Picasso?

Scanning this thread for my response, I was mystified that I couldn't find it, but none had been removed. Then it struck me, it must have been the one I was compiling when the site went down. So here we go again.

I once joined a department at work where there was a Charlie Chaplin. It was a long time before I discovered his real name was Robert Chaplin but I had been fooled because everybody called him Charles.

I also at one time had a work colleague called Jim Edwards. That was his real name.
