Phew! To say it’s a new one on me is an understatement. The n is presumably foremost-first-of Norwegian. I can’t get near the ‘hit’ part of the clue. I’ll investigate further. Thanks for direction.

Thanks, highbury. He's from the 19th century apparently. I wondered if it was Er/re (on reversed, flipping) after N, foremost of Norwegian... and tried to make Teg = hit (get reversed, also flipping).

The parsing shouldn’t be that abstruse surely. Nothing else in the rest of the crossword is anything near as convoluted.

Thanks, Lie-in King. I'd spent a lot of time in Chambers today (with the Spectator puzzle) so didn't explore 'get'.

Apparently hit on can also mean think of, understand, discover. That would give the 'get' as in understand.

In this puzzle, once I find something that fits, I usually leave it there. I'm perfectly prepared to accept more apposite reasoning.

I only really do it because Lynne enjoyed it & we used to do it together.

Lie-in King, I often settle on the 'that'll do' parsing for myself, but attempt to try harder for others! I always liked seeing mamya answering - the breadth of knowledge was incredible. I admired her cryptic skills too.
