What do I do ??

I am a mother wanting to go back to work..

I've applied for numerous vacancies in retail and office work but nobody seems to reply online. Do I carry on applying for vacancies online or is it best to see what the Jobcentre has to offer in my local town?

I can't be far away incase I need to collect my daughter from school, so travelling into London is not practical.

I also need to find a job that can fit around school hours/term time and pays enough !!!

Poor mothers, we don't stand a chance !

Well, you certainly do need to check what your local JobCentre has on offer but you don't need to visit the office. Their entire database of vacancies can be searched here:
http://www.jobcentreplus.gov.uk/Internet/setLo cale.do?country=GB&language=en&page=/initialis e.do

Hints: Page 1 - Select 'All'. (There might be some suitable jobs in a category you've not considered).

That automatically takes you to Page 4 - Enter your postcode and choose a suitable radius.

Then choose the relevant hours, etc.

PS: I've just tried the site and it seems to be throwing up error messages. That's not unusual late at night (especially on a Friday). I suspect that maintenance is carried out around this time. So you might not be able to use the site straight away but it's definitely worth trying again later.

Keep on going and keep on applying. It can seem like ages till you get your first interview let alone job, but persevere and you'll eventually get something. Have you considered looking at what your local education department is offering - if you need to fit round school hours what could be better than dinner lady etc?

When I was a child my mum got a job working in a school because she needed to be home in time for when I was coming home from school.
You could try getting a job in a near by school from a job as a teaching assistant to a dinnerladie.
