This is covered by the Sale of Goods ACT which states that goods must be "fit for purpose" and "of merchantable quality". This clearly wasn't. Contact the retailer, and make them sort it out. Don't allow them to fob you off (I am sure that any reputable retailer will resolve this without any problems). It is their responsibility, not your's or the manufacturer's. This assumes the machine was bought new by you. Good luck.
Just to add, you can go to the retailer under the legal rights side of things, or the manufacturer under the warranty if there is one. Also, if you paid by credit card or finance agreement arranged by the store, I would contact the credit company as well as they are obliged to help you.
Just to clarify as well, warranties and guarantees are completely optional, and they can set their own terms and conditions (to an extent) so they may be good or they may be rubbish.
