It'll take as long as it takes, I suppose, but if it gets worse then call your GP. I did the same as you a year ago but luckily only twisted my knee - but my knee did take a few days to notify me of this, so keep an eye on your symptoms.
I waited for about three weeks to see if the knee planned to get better but it didn't so I went to the GP then (or rather two weeks later when I could get an appointment) ... on reflection that was five weeks wasted.
Depending how quickly you can be seen it might be worth making an appointment. You can always cancel if you start improving during the waiting period. Heads deserve more attention than stupid knees.
