Watching Xfactor on Saturday 30th Sept 2006, when Simon is about to announce his final 7 (8), there is a piano piece that I have heard before on a TV show/film (not sure which), it has quite a sad feel to it and its bugging the life out of me. Anyone hear it and know what it is?

The piece you are after is called Flames from the Oscar winning film Crash.

Thanks for that its actually Glasgow Love Theme by Craig Armstrong from Love Actually - just found it..... Many thanks anyway

They must be similar, there were several pieces used in the show and Flames was definitely one of them! Glad you found the one you were after though.
