Sometimes I find it difficult at work to keep a straight face when a child lets one rip. It's not so much the offensive noise that makes me giggle, it's watching the reaction of the rest of the class.
farts are hilarious! They are the great equalizer. Everybody farts no matter how much money they make, what race they are or what religion they follow.
I think it's partly because it is unexpected and the sound is funny, but moreso because you can't see it! It is something that is unexpected and just appears from nowhere. It is partly the shock that makes people laugh as well as the fact that it is a bottom noise, which makes it a bit taboo and naughty.
I did one this morning, kids were in the bedroom and everyone thought it was hilarious, it sounded like Edd the Duck was hiding under the covers!! :-))
Early morning ones rarely stink, however much we hopefully sniff below the duvet. The best are at about 2am after a right proper curry, when you wonder what on earth is going on inside you.
Sorry joby1, but there are tears streaming down my face here. A couple of kids playing in the corner with Barbies, innocent chatter, mum in bed, knees up probably, then a slight urge, a bit of a push, and TRUMPH !!!
You then have to move your knees up and down and waft so you can gauge the quality.
Most people in western cultures inherit the unspoken attitude that farting is unpleasant and socially unacceptable - which is why children make such a big deal out of it.
The laughter that follows is less of a sign of amusment, and more a release of tension - it's the same reaction when people laugh at utterly inappropriate moments - again, it's not amusement, just a nervous reaction.
