When I got this new phone I was able to transfer my music ring tones from my PC by connecting a usb lead, As soon as I plugged it in a message came up on the phone something like MTP and I chose between transfer and charge. The sounds are now in my phone;s music file.
I have just tried to do this with my wife's new phone which is exactly the same model and nothing happens! I also tried my own again and the same.
What have I done wrong - is it something in the settings? Is there any other method of transfer?
Sorry, I missed a step: Try going into Settings >>> Notifications >>> App Settings >>> Messages Scroll down to "incoming messages" (This the step I missed ... continue to next step after this).
Thanks Giz and Buenchico
I take both your points. Re, leads - my new Xperia 10 IV came in a box without a lead or charger, I contacted Sony and they tell me they no longer include these in the box!
They told me that the charging lead is not always ok for transfer data and I need a transfer lead which has 4 not 2 connectors in it - never knew that! I will wait for a new lead coming today and report back.
Thanks again

That is a good point about emailing!
I have just done that by copying the file for the ringtone from my laptop and pasting into my GMail and sending it to myself.
It has now appeared as an attachment in Gmail on my phone and I have opened it and it plays perfectly but how do I get it into my music file as it has to be there for me to add it as a ringtone!
When I opened the attachment it asked me if I always wanted to open it as a music file and I agreed and it played it but.....itdoes not show in my music file on phone!
Thanks again

Hello Etch
Thought I had because I used the lead to transfer data to MY phone which is exactly same as my wife's and it worked!
But it does not now so I did not realise that a charging lead is not the same as a data tranfer lead and Sony said there are 4 connections not 2 so I have orderded one on Amazon and will let you know what happens
Thanks
Moggie - what email are you using?
I'm assuming they will all be similar, but I just emailed a ring tone to myself on Outlook and went to my Email on my Xperia 10 III.
To the right of the attachment are 3 dots - you need to click on this and it will give you the option to save. It's quite fiddly though .... if you click too far to the right nothing happens and if you click too far to the left I get asked how I want to open the file .... it took me about 3 or 4 attempts.
Giz
Have looked just now and all I have is the file name in a little box with a download arrow and a drive icon. No dots anywhere to right or left except higher up to right with options reply forward print and mark unread

Hello everyone - well I have managed to transfer the music - how I am not sure but thanks to you all I now have the ringtones for calls and the notifications on my wife's phone but.............................I have another small problem and I don't know what I have done.
Going into settings - sounds I went into calls and sim 1 and added the tone for calls and tested that by ringing the phone from mine and that works ok.
However I did the same for notifications (which is the sms?) added the different tone for that and tested it by pressing it and that was all ok - however when I sent a text to the phone from mine it went thru BUT there was no notification sound!
I did not touch anything else in sound settings I don't think (is the 'do not disturb- supposed to be 'on or 'off'?
Just in case it was something to do with my downloaded ringtone I reset it with one off the list on the phone and that did not ring out either!
Thanks everyone
Further above question I have noted the text also appears as a notification at top of home screen but still no sound. My phone is exactly the same and I get the same sound for texts (SMS) and all notifications
Please help me!
Thank you
Thanks for everyone who help in this protracted query and..................

You were absolutely correct! When I showed this last answer to my wife she remembered that when she swiped down twice to shut off her phone she touched one of the squares on the left which was the 'do not disturb on/off button' As soon as we reversed this I was immediately able to send her a text and the notification sound was there! All this time something simple but I would not have known what to do without your persistance - so thanks again.
In addition I now have her original ringtone and notification tone installed from my laptop. I have written all this info down in case I ever have the same problem again with another phone.
Thanks again
