If anyone's interested it's La Boheme by Puccini on BBC Four. I've seen it there a couple of years ago but I expect I'll still watch it.

I've never seen Sonya Yoncheva in action, so this is something to look forward to.
Dougie............. opera is an acquired taste alright. You have to work at it.
Maybe start with Rossini's "La Donna Del Lago". Only because one of the main characters is a highland chieftain called........ Douglas :o)
Sorry to hijack, LadyB, but I feel there's a little missionary work needed here.
Here's the opening aria.............. just for our Dougie :o)

I agree with you, LB. Opera does need careful introduction - and television is never the best. On my first visit to an opera (La Boheme at the Royal Opera House) I went convinced I’d snooze throughout the performance. Did I? No way! It was gobsmackingly superb! I don’t like ALL opera - there’s no snobbery in it for me - but I would urge anyone to dip their toe in by seeing a live performance of either La Boheme or Carmen. Don’t knock it ‘til you’ve tried it.
A few well known bits of opera are fine but in general I really don't like it, much like I really don't enjoy musical theatre or films. I've only been to one opera and that was The Bartered Bride at Covent Garden. I was 9 or 10 and it was a primary school trip organised by a very dedicated music teacher who chose the children who showed promise. It put me right off opera! But I could sing well. I can't now!!
Naomi I've just planned my first outing of the year IF I am well enough. Friend and I will try and get tickets for Glyndebourne. We will hire a wheelchair and she will push me around. Says she can't wait as it will be the first time she has ever been in charge LOL. She is the one who blacked her own eyes the last time we went. We want to see L'elisir d'amore. Seen it there before and it was wonderful.
