Looking on the Waitrose website, they sell the extra large oranges in threes and the large ones in sixes.

For each one, they give three servings. That suggests the ones you bought are meant to be twice the size of even the large ones.

If that is not the case, I suggest you buy them again, buy the large ones to compare them and take it up with Waitrose.

you'll find much the same is true of big oranges in other shops - at least at this time of year. November/December is best for big oranges with thin skins. Many of those bought back in October could be used as cricket balls.

Waitrose oranges are grown in a more cooler locations .

The peel is thicker in order to keep the insides warm

I usually find that if an orange or other citrus fruit feels spongy , then it's sweet
