Clue: One for the Wrinklies (remember '71)
ah right, decimalisation Feb 15 1971 we always said pence for Dee, and initially new pence for Pee. Often we didn't say anything for the pence, eg one and six. D is from the latin denarius.
I never have said "pee" - I think it's simply stupid.
And as for those who say "one pence"...
I'll have a pee please Bob.
We used to say 'punce'. Tuppence, thrupence...

We never said denarii and the s stood for solidi.
Barry I used to say tuppence but threpence not thrupence.
Might be a regional thing.
Could be. Lots of chocolate bars seemed to be thrupence ha'penny, or aypknee as I said
The abbreviation for pounds (weight) is lbs. Crazy.
A Tanner for 6 pence
A bob for a shilling
I don't know really but the old monetary system had been around for centuries, then along comes decimalisation and a "new beginning" for everyone, which probably spawned the terminology.
Brian J John, you forgot 'half a crown' for 2s 6d:-)
^^^

And a Hape penny for a half penny
anybody remember the farthing?
Yes, I still have some farthings.

I did use pee and dee in the early stages of decimalisation when it was necessary to differentiate between new and old pence.
and did you realise the florin was the first decimal coin later replaced by the 10p coin.
Back to Barry's post. Round here we said "Thrippence". And yes, I remember the farthing. It had a robin on it. I don't remember it actually been in use though.
Or was it a wren?
It's a wren, not a robin.
Yes i just about remember th Farthing. There was 240 old pennies to the Pound , a Farthing being a quarter of a penny so can you imagine 960 Farthings in your pocket to make up £1
