There are two schools of thought re Trump and Putin and the war.
1. Putin took it as a signal that the US was retreating into itself and would not intervene
2. The Mike Pompeo view that Putin did not dare invade as long as Trump was president and waited until after he left office to invade.

I’m sceptical of both: I reckon we overestimate the extent to which Putin pays any attention at all to the real world.
There we all were last Jan and Feb flattering ourselves that Putin just wanted the attention from all those high ranking visitors to Moscow.
Some idea that was.

Ich, I think Putin would have loved Trump to win the election because it would have made his long held invasion plans much easier.

As it turned out, he did it anyway, because as you say, he ultimately pays little attention to what's going on outside of his own head.
