He doesn't necessarily expect it to be this time round, but it's his lifelong ambition and he won't give up easily. Look at Trump! He's just the same; once they've had a taste they can't let it go and really believe that anything goes - the bigger the lie the more fanatical will be your supporters; the shooting dead of someone on Main Street won't put off your fans and they'll still vote for you. They really do despise the great unwashed and think they can make them jump to their own tune.
By admitting he misled MP's, Mr Johnson is simply getting in front of the accusations that will be levelled at him.
When they are levelled, he can simply say "Yes, I've already admitted that ..." taking all the sting out of any impact the accusations may have had.
Apart from that, he is more than capable of simply brazening it out.
He will answer all the questions, and the committee will remember that there is actually nothing they can do to him, and the whole thing will collapse like a badly cooked souffle.

we must be the only country in the world where such a pathetic witch hunt would last so long.
noop - 1692 - one or two y innit? - Memo to self: (" good ole Gromiver!") must write in simple AB-speak to some Abers
McCarthy Witchhunt 1952-55
as TTT might quip: the fun has hardly begun yet!
("Knarly news item - we are interrupting transmission with breaking news. yes yes, we have it confirmed. Boris Johnson was observed telling the truth at 14.00 yesterday")
PM as a damned liar - has that occurred before ( Harold Wilson 1964-6)

His defence document is redacted.
The bad advice may well have been credited to someone but is now hidden.
There has been been messages leaked of warnings that the parties were against the guidelines. It is possible there were contrary advice that said they were fine. It may be that Johnson chose the advice he wanted to hear rather than any he didn’t want to hear.
I have my popcorn ready for this afternoon :-)
