I know. It makes you want to spit. I save mine on CD Read Write discs, then make TWO CDR copies and leave the original CDR-W version. I have had several cheap CDR discs fade away to nothing, but only one CDR-W go wonky.
I have used many of the cheap "cake" type CDRs for backup media at work, but they only have to be kept for a cycle of a month. For my photography I invest in the expensive ones with a brand name remeniscent of the Queen's husband. So far discs go back six years without degradation, but I must say, I'm not totally convinced of the long term validity of the media.
