Listening to local radio and the female presenter is talking about UNESCO. When she opened the topic, she pronounced it as Un-esco as opposed to Yew-nesco.
Reminded me of the time when a tv presenter was giving the sports report on a Chelsea win back in the day when Willian was playing for them. He had scored the winner and she actually pronounced his name Will-i-an. Obviously a fan of Will-i-am.
What have you heard mispronounced by someone who ought to know better.
A couple of years ago I heard a Radio 5 traffic report which mentioned the Polish War Memorial. Polish was pronounced with a short rather than a long O.
There's a BBC traffic reporter who often refers to buzz routes. The strangest one I heard was Nigella Lawson when she referred to her Microwave. I thought she was referring to a new dish when she said Meekro Warvee.
What about the village near where I live? Slaithwaite
Slay thwaite if you're really posh
Slathwait for `comers in', and those who aren't as posh
And Slawit for us locals
