You grapple with dean Mayer for a few hours.....and........they reward you with an atlas? Anyone got any opinions on this?? A book token even.....for Jaysus sake.....as if there weren't enough atlases in the world......

Is that what the prize is? I thought the atlas was for Mephisto.
The atlas is for the Mephisto but it is also included among the books for first prize in the cryptic. The runners-up prizes for the cryptic are currently dictionary and thesaurus sets and for the Mephisto £20 Waterstones vouchers. I've still three of those to use.
Thanks, Novalis. I do the puzzle every week, but have never paid attention to the prizes!
From the blurb:-
The first correct solution opened after next Saturday wins
a collection of reference books — The Times Universal
Atlas of the World, Collins English Dictionary & Thesaurus,
and Bradford’s Crossword Solver’s Dictionary, published
by HarperCollins. Three runners-up win the Collins
English Dictionary & Thesaurus.
Thanks again, Novalis. That all seems reasonable - and reasonably generous, not quite 'rewarding [the solver, winner] with an atlas'!
I've got 3 atlases to use LOL!!!
I would prefer to be runner up!
Roslyn, three of the same, three ST atlases? I prefer globes myself, so maybe just as well that I have never won!

I see where the Telegraph gives 25 quid if you win the Herculis.......there used to be a pen as well......cut-backs I suppose.......
When it first started the Herculis prize was £500. Somebody I know won it.
Yes 3 atlases ...each one a newer edition , but basically the same!!
Some were for Mephisto, some from Times Jumbo.....I'm sure we had 2 more which I gave away!!!
For many years the prize for the ST crossword was a Cross (geddit?) silver fountain pen - I have one. Now it's the same prize as the Saturday Times Jumbo - it's cheap for them as the atlas and reference books are published by the same group as owns the Times/Sunday times. I don't send entries anymore as I've won the books, twice!

Don't get me wrong......I love the ST puzzle.......but if they're going to give a prize they should give a decent one......not a bleedin' atlas.....rant over.
Someone must have been listening....today runner up in mephisto...£20 waterstones voucher...AND a £25 book token for an Azed win!!!
