I have had a deep, tickly cough for over two weeks, also bringing up some yellow mucus, mainly in the morning. Dr said no crackling a week ago, no antibiotics given, but no better now. It’s draining me, will it get better on its own? Is there a chance of the mucus causing lung infection, or does this usually clear up on its own. Just making me feel tired all the time. Thanks all.
I am no medic, but our old GP once gave the advice, as a rule of thumb, that if the mucus is clear or white no antibiotics required. If it turns yellow that is when you should go and see him. Also added never let it get to green.
I had the same about a month ago smurfchops. It just wouldn't shift for over 2 weeks. I rang doctor and described conditions over the phone. I too was bringing up green mucus, and was prescribed antibiotics. It cleared after a week of taking them. Unfortunately, 10 days later, I have another sore throat and cough with yellow mucus. So will probably have to ring up for some more. Fed up with feeling ill. Hope you can get rid of yours soon, you definitely needs antibiotics.
The colour of the sputum is not necessarily a pointer for infection or antibiotic therapy.
The condition of the patient is the all important factor.
However, in your case smurfy, I think that you would benefit from antibiotics.
