Our 10month old Westie is one very noisy boy, he has been neutered but continues to bark at everything going past our house, even when he's the only one who can see it !!!
I know terriers are on the tuneful side but will he calm down a little as he grows older or do we need earplugs ??

You just need to train him, try dog training classes.
I suggest you take him to puppy training classes, preferably clicker training, as this is a gentle and fun way for both you and your dog to learn. Your local vet will know where the nearest classes are held. If not, phone your nearest RSPCA and they might know. You pup will soon learn in a fun way that the barking is not acceptable to you. Please don't put this off, it is important you do this when he is still a puppy as it is much easier at this age. Best of luck!
Info on clicker training can be found at: http://www.clickerzoneuk.co.uk/sking2.html and
here:http://www.clickertraining.com/training/clicker_basics/ It is a US site which also has good info.
My dogs all go to classes, but would bark at anyone going past if I let them. Try to avoid the situation, by covering over any glass that he can see through, or putting a barrier up if he is getting near to a fence to bark. Having said that mine can hear a dog going past on the ther side of the road through brick walls - must be a disc on their collar that jingles or else they have xray vision! If you are there, try a plastic bottle with water in it and squirt it each time he barks saying something like 'where's that spray' so hopefully in time you will just have to say the words and not get the bottle!

If he is doing it while you are not there, an anti-bark collar that sprays a citrus liquid every time they bark does work on some dogs, but some get used to them.
Try looking on ebay they are often sold on there cheaper than in pet shops.

thank you for all your answers, unfortunately health problems [mine] make dog training a bit difficult but will persevere.

why not try an anti bark collar?
