Just received an e-mail from Scottish Gas to let me know that energy rates will be going down from July. Nice to have something to balance the increase in the price of my beans - two weeks ago a small tin cost 50p - today they had shot up to 75p!

What type of beans? If they're baked beans, you must be buying some ruddy expensive ones! I pay £1.75 for 4 'regular' tins in Morrisons (but admittedly they were just 99p about 18 months ago!):

(They're very good, BTW).

That's the price for Branston beans Chris which are the ones I like most. Will try the Morrison's ones next time.
Good to hear maggie.

Reminds me of a scene in Blackadder when Edmund is trying to teach Baldric maths:

Blackadder: So there's two beans add two more beans, what does that make?
Baldric: A very small casserole.
I like the Morrison's one because the beans are packed right to the top of the tin and the sauce is lovely.

However, if you really want Branston's, they're £3.70 for 6 in Sainsbury's (= 62p per can) or £4.00 in B&M and Iceland (= 67p per can).

However if you shop online with Bother (where you only need to spend £40 on your groceries to get free delivery on a 'next weekday' basis), they're just £2.78 (= 46p per can).

In case you're not familiar with Bother . . .

Maggie, I think I might understand why you buy the small tin, but it works out so much more expensive than buying a large tin and splitting it between 2 days. I understand if you don't want to have beans for 2 days on the run, but even if you throw half a tin away, it still works out cheaper.
Where do you prefer to shop?
Eee Barsel /2 days on the run/ might be with dem beans!

Barsel, Sainsbury's have started selling their small tins of own brand baked beans and spaghetti for half the price of the full price tins (22p cf 44p, I think).

Barsel, I prefer Asda but have a Lidl and a Home Bargains quite close too. Tesco and B&M 10 mins away but would have a bit of a drive for Morrisons or Sainsbury's. I buy the small tin because it is the perfect size for a baked potato but I suppose I could split a large tin and keep half in the fridge.
I buy the 'regular' (big?) cans and use a third of a can at a time, with the unused beans keeping for several days (indeed, perhaps up to a week) in the fridge without any problems.
Maggie/ Tesco large tin Branstons £1 ...£3 for four if you have Clubcard. Just read there will be a shortage of beans owing to poor harvest and Russia/Ukraine war so better stock up.
I knew someone would make a reference to the runs!
Maggie, I was just going to tell you about Tesco as I got some myself, but hazbean :-) beat me to it.
Like your style, Barsel!
Asda sells the large tin for .90p, so if you use half, that's only .45p instead of 75p. Bargain.
I like your cat Haz, is it a Tortoiseshell?
Yes, Barsel - she was a sweetie - sadly died 2021 aged 21 yrs. She is on AB to remind me. x Gawd, I feel a tear coming on.
Awww sorry Haz. I had one many years ago and called her Tiger.
Still think about her and would love to have another but unfortunately, the Housing Association don't allow pets. :-(
That's the trouble with pets ...we get so attached to them but she had a good life roaming the garden and fields.
Mine had been spayed when I got her and I didn't know if she had ever had kittens, so I got her a tortoiseshell kitten and called her Lola.
It never occurred to me that Lola would drive her mad, always wanting to play, and I think Tiger was too old.
Awww I'm welling up now.
Buy the UT size and get a can cover (they are usually sold for pet food but work fine on all tins).

We do this for both Beans and tomatoes. Keep easily for a week if you wipe the juice from the rim (carefully as its sharp) with a piece of kitchen roll. And of course dont double dip to contaminate the item.
