It does not answer your question, but the other day I was watching a TV progam about 9/11.

It said when the first plane struck there were about 4,500 planes over US air space at the time.

On Horizon the other day (about surviving a plane crash) it said about 3 million people a day catch a flight. If you said the average flight lasted 6 hours, that would mean about 1/4 of them (or about 750,000) are up in the air at any one time. Anyone else got an opinion?
