Some clues have one letter difference between definition and wordplay.
(e,g, Def gives try. Wordplay gives cry)

13 Visible terms of reference in black boxes (7)
28. Ancestor’s burned in terrible shunt (5)
38. Moving tree’s base is way to create opening in fencing (5)

2. Collector of Roman votes supporting court reversal (5)
18. Service, Federer’s second making strike swerving ball (5)
30. Old Irish guru having tips for offensive gents, perhaps (5)

I do have the occupation and the employer. The hero could be 3,6 but have not found him in the grid yet.

Thanks.

13 'terms' = R(eferenc)E inside SABLE [one of the terms is a misprint].
28 anag 'S[h]UNT' - the 'h' misprint should be an 'i' (it's an obscure word).
38 a 5 letter fruit tree with its base ('e') moved to 3rd place (another quite obscure word - for a fencing move).
2 URN is where the votes go (around) CT (reversed) - the misprinted 'C' should be 'U'.
18 religious service (4 letters) + E (it's a pool/snooker swerve).
30 'tips for 'O(ffensive)E' + LAV [one of the 'tips' is a misprint.
sorry, hankir - the 'e' from the fruit tree moves to 4th place (my counting gets worse).
You won't find the hero in the grid until you make further changes.
... and he's 5,6.
