I know some people have the black box installed in their car for their motor insurance but can it be used by an individual to monitor /judge their own driving or anyone else that drives the car?

I’m surprised this question has been completely unanswered – not that I’m directly answering your question.

A colleague has downloaded an app on his phone that gives a score for his driving (by individual journey if he wants), I think it uses the phone's accelerometer function to measure braking and accelerating rates (including cornering speed) and might even use GPS mapping to access road speed limits (but I doubt it).

Although it might give a driving score based on braking and accelerating rates and possibly speed, as I pointed out to my colleague, if he drove on the wrong side of the road for an extended period without breaking the speed limit and without braking/accelerating hard – it would give him a good driver score.

Thanks, Hymie, I'd be interested to know more
As someone who only uses their phone for emergencies – I’ve no further details on the App, other than I’m pretty sure it is free.

Other ABers must be aware of this type of App, and can supply more/full details.
If no-one responds, I'll ask my colleague for details of the App he uses.
there is an app called "drivesmart".

Thanks TTT.
Please ask your colleague, Hymie
Question Author
TTT, can't find an app called Drivesmart that has that functionality, could it be Drivescore?
Apparently the App is called ‘Drivescore’ by ‘Clearscore’ – my colleague advises that he has stopped using it, as it was supposed to reduce his insurance costs (which it did not). Perhaps he is not a good driver.
Question Author
I'll check it out, thanks, Hymie. Not really bothered about the insurance side of it, just curious
My colleague did show me some of the Drivescore data which marked him down for quite slow rates of acceleration and cornering, perhaps he had his mobile phone rolling around on the passenger seat.

Itll be interesting
barry 03:43, no there is a drivescore but not as good.
