and if you take the lower figure - the increase is a mark-up and if you take the second figure ( as denominator) then it ( er the increase that is!) is a profit

I do know how to take the VAT off the price of goods, regardless of the VAT rate. Not that anyone is asking

"I do know how to take the VAT off the price of goods, regardless of the VAT rate. Not that anyone is asking" - just divide by 1.2 so if you have 156 including VAT to get to that value you did 1.2 * X = 156 right ? So divide both sides by 1.2 you get X=156/1.2 .. so 130 takes the VAT out.

yes ToraToraTora.....or divide by 6 and take that away (so long as VAT is 20%)
156 divided by 6= 26
156-26= 130

Yes that's another way that works for 20%. The customs and excise always used to provide us with the fraction to use when filling the VAT returns so for 20% multiply by 1/6 for the VAT for 17.5 it used to be 7/47.
