David Small - thanks for that info. I hadn't realised that George Orwell was the pen name of Eric Blair. Haven't read Animal Farm but loved Down and Out in Paris and London.

animal farm is a satire on Stalin's russia

almost a roman a cle - stalin = napoleon etc...

the pigs are the politburo, and the horse that is worked to death is a Stakhanovite.

Blair ( died from TB and finished the book on Jura for his health:he died ) was an odd bod. Public school and got a job in the Burma Police/ civil service. He didnt like it and became anti colonial, and resigned. He ended up down and out in paree. Did he fight in Spain? anyway fell out of love with stalinism, and wrote animal farm.
