Armstrong and Aldrin Landed on the moon. They emerged in the early hours of the 21st to be the first men on the moon. There has been a debate ever since that he meant to say "One small step for (A) man....." etc but omitted the "A". I think it's better without the "A" personally.

He meant to say, "a man" as that referred to his making the, "small step".

Using, "man" and "mankind" makes no sense.
It makes sense either way. Leaving the craft was a small step for 'man' or for 'a man' but landing on the moon was certainly a giant leap for mankind.
