tiff/tiffin/tift also means lunch ...chambers...

Read in conjunction with two lines further down

"Tiffin, tif′in, n. the East Indian name for luncheon.—v.i. Tiff, to take lunch"

and as Tiff is an alternative for Tift....

Ah yes... realised it was close to tiffin but didn't realise tiffin could also be tiff...and then tift. One step beyond for me
