Is it legal for a company to ask it's employees to pay for personal protective equipment? I do know that companys can claim for PPE as tax deductable items, thereby incurring no cost. This relates to protective clothing, footwear, industrial gloves etc. And I know a couple of companys where employees have to make a financial contribution. Is this legal, bearing in mind that these items are tax deductable for the company?

I work offshore and we are told that if you need PPE to carry out your job the company MUST provide it. If we need anything extra that is not on the PPE list we can pay for it and then claim the money back.
No it is not legal. If you are a full time employee and need PPE the company is legally obliged to provide it at no cost to you. I work as Research Technician and I am provided with a whole host of PPE, including prescription safety glasses which cost 180.
Supplying PPE equipment is solely the employers responsiblity I am doing an ADR course just now and this came up in the exam papers and the answer most deffinitely is the employer
if the employer is charging for PPE then he must stop doing it and the only way for him to stop is for all the employees to get together and say no to paying for the equipment

I used to work for a company that charged a 1 for a pair of gloves that were useless so I ended up buying my own gloves and they lasted a lot longer than the ones they supplied and nedles to say I did not stay long with the company

PPE must be provided by the Company under HSA guidlines
Sorry HSE, Health and safety Executive (its Friday)
Just to add that I think that VAT is NOT charged on PPE either.
You have to buy your own ppe.
It's not the employers problem!

Your company ABSOLUTELY MUST pay for any ppe you need, it is an offense under hse for them not to provide you with any equipment you need and for all instances when you might need them to be risk assesed
