Fleshpots... for some (many at times) of Doc's earlier puzzles, the lack of Brewer's wasn't crucial - solvers managed to get the unclued answers quite easily. It depended on the theme, some being more obvious than others. I think we had 'Green' once, and it was easy enough to spot Fingers, Man, Light and so on. This week's puzzle wasn't quite so  simple.

I am stuck on 20d and can find nothing to fit .

I have "athwart" for the crosser which could be wrong

This is very interesting. So to complete this puzzle, and the aforementioned clue in particular, Brewer's is essential, if as you say, the "milked" version is the only one named in it. Sounds a little in fair to the general solver, but then again the Speccy isn't really a general crossword. Lots to think about...

Fleshpots... the puzzle does say 'confirmed in Brewer's',  so solvers know before they start, and I think many people could find a means of accessing that pr confirming their answers. The same applies to references to the Oxford Dictionary of Quotations, the ODQ feaures in quite a few thematic puzzles.

Floko. Athwart is correct. 20 D is a single word, I don't think it's linked to any other answer (but I didn't tick off all the preamble stuff!)

Thanks NAC.

I thought the mention of Brewers was a big clue to the theme.

'Verifiable in Brewer'

Not Brewers.
