New Cd/Dvd External Drive Won't Connect

Hi,

Have a new CD/DVD external drive but it won't connect, keeps trying (making a noise on the PC like it is trying) then disconnecting (again, making a noise on the PC). It loads ok on another PC, the cdrom.sys driver is there on both PCs. I ran a driver updater, it isn't mentioned. When I look at Devices on the PC I want it on, it is "there" but always says unavailable.

Are both PCs running the same operating system?

It maybe that the driver is not supported by the operating system on the PC it will not connect.

Both PCs are running Windows 10.

Just remembered, I did used to have an external CD/DVD drive on the "new" PC (it packed up), just plug & play as I thought this one would be.

When troubleshooting a CD/DVD drive not properly connecting, four possible things I would try would be:
Search YouTube for recommendations: https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=DVD+external+drive+won%27t+connect
Ensure sufficient voltage is supplied to the external drive using a powered cable or a USB hub connected to a power adapter.
On the PC, install a video software that is reliable at detecting and playing DVDs. My choice would be Kodi. https://kodi.tv
If possible and applicable, try restoring a backup of the working drivers from the other PC.

Does it have 2 usb plugs?  If so you may need to connect them both at the same time.

Try it with the plug closest to the drive first, then try them both at the same time

It has a USB3.0 & a USB-C connection, nowhere to plug a power supply. But it works fine on a 2nd PC anyway ! All I can try I think is copy the driver from the 2nd PC to the 1st, but not confident that's the problem tbh.
