Becoming A British Citizen

My girlfriend of over 20 years is Italian. She has lived in the UK since 2003 and has right to remain status. Recently she has expressed in interest in becoming a British Citizen. She is woried since Brexit that her status in the UK could change suddenly without warning. So, what are the advantages of becoming a British Citizen? Are there any disadvantages? Thank you.

If she's born in Italy she's automatically entitled to Italian citzenship which means EUSSR citzenship, obvious. Pointless question just an excuse to criticise the UK, nothing to see here.

given the number of citizens from the EU with the the right to settle it would take something catastrophic for a British government to revoke her right to settle. If there were ever to happen I would suggest that you wouldn't want them living here either for their own safety.

Hi everyone. I didn't intend this to become a brexit/remain thing. My girlfriend is a real person with a genuine worry. Please don't make this about trying to get each sides point across.

Not sure I understand about the daughter thing. She is actually almost 10 and I've rounded up. As I don't like being to specific about personal matters.

The obvious advantage is that she would know, and if desired could boast, of being a citizen of the greatest nation in the world.

Perhaps the biggest disadvantage is the complete lack of support for democracy from today's UK politicians, and their zeal for bending over backwards to please other groups and try to destroy the culture that has developed here. Authority needs a reorg of it's system and of those involved.

For once, Hymie, you are absolutely correct. That is indeed a benefit – to the UK. It means this country does not have to provide unfettered access to 450m people living in the EU.

Just out of interest, why do you believe it is right that the UK should provide an Italian citizen with the right to settle here again if she decides to up sticks back to Italy for a prolonged period? No normal (i.e.non-EU) countries operate their border controls in anything like that manner. Why should the UK operate theirs any differently?

But back to the OP. There is not a cat in Hell’s chance of the estimate 6m EU citizens with settled status being forcibly ejected from the UK. We can’t even eject a handful of those convicted of serious criminal offences without a long struggle. Yes, she will have to ensure she does not decamp elsewhere for a prolonged period. But that would happen – in some form or another - in any normal country of which she did not hold citizenship. EU countries are not normal countries. Their citizens suffer from the delusions of grandeur that the Euromaniacs have bestowed upon themselves that they preside over a single nation State. They don’t, but many EU citizens believe that they do. The sooner these delusions are dispelled, the better it will be for all concerned.
