Banning Mobile Phones In Schools

Just tell the kids who is running the school. Turn em off on entry. If they ring or are seen to be used during lessons then they will be confiscated and detentions issued.

Believe it or not sometimes kids are actually asked to use their phones in class. The reason it's a bad idea in my view is because I don't believe blanket bans are appropriate. If individual schools want to make their own arrangements that is fine. And indeed that appears to be the case. A directive to ban phones from central government sound more dare I say it like something the nasty lefties would do :-)

I cannot see why there is any reason that young school children need mobile phones in school.  Why would parents be worried about their kids whilst in school.  If there's a problem schools can phone parents and vice versa, as back I  the 'olden days'.  There is no way I would let a  young  child have a mobile phone.  They hamper their development and social skills.

hahahah did you ever try it? i did 1968 - call at the School Office, miss made such a song and dance ( designed to, on purpose. miss has MUCH better things to do ) use only once

Simple enough. An official ban. Any pupil daft enough to try go use it on class gets it confiscated. Returned intact at the end of the day.

 

Parents and kids still get a communication  channel outside of lessons. Classes are undisturbed.

You are onto a loser trying to ban phones.

We talked about this once before and I mentioned that there used to be a debate about banning electronic calculators. Very few argue for that now.

Sensible policy is to let schools decide how they manage things like phones in the classroom, phones in the playground etc etc.  There are times and places where a school will want to ban them, just as they are banned - or at least the use of them - in certain situations in the wider world. But they are a part of our lives now, like calculators.

the ed has assured me that 55.63% ABers ( counting the no-shows as deffo yes) agree with the proposition:

Mr Skoylance ( the Head) hiring a steam roller and stationing it outside the school and anyone with a phone has to look while it is crushed. Second offenders, then it is themselves

PP  in my younger days in school in the early 50s,I don't think most homes didn't have land lines let alone mobiles!  There was  no contact whatsoever!  We survived!!  I hate the damn things.

I'll give a practical example: suppose there's something a school might want to do that is a lot easier if pupils can use their phones for it. That school might normally require pupils to hand in their phones at the start of the day anyway.

But a govenment directive means they can no longer do it.

Our nearest senior school is about 15 miles away, the journey mostly along country roads. I wouldn't like a child of mine to travel to and from school without the reassurance that I can be contacted if necessary.   I think the rule should be that phones are switched off at school and if that rule is broken, the phone be confiscated until the end of the day.

I think Gromit has a point but banning them is a bit extreme, it does disturb and amuse me though when you are in a pub etc, look around the room and people are glued to their phones like they are posessed by a powerful force. I have a phone but I don't have twitfaceagramtok to continually read and update so I just use it when I need to for it's main purpose.

So what is the example?  What is on the phone they couldnt look up on a computer - that I would hope the schools have by now.

Me too TTT, but then I have had a mobile since Feb 1990 so the novelty wore off decades ago.
