This policy is utterly ridiculous, while there may be some departments where it could be managed there are many who could not. My old stomping ground, the Prison Service, has - to the best of my knowledge - been understaffed for decades putting staff under stress and at risk. Without the right to strike they have no way to challenge this idiotic policy.

This policy is utterly ridiculous,

Possibly.

However, during the pandemic the number of Civil Servants increased by 65,000 to cope with the extra work required. Those numbers did not reduce at the end of the pandemic. This is costing the taxpayer at least £3bn a year. So what are all these people now doing?

Are prison officers still civil servants?  I thought many are employed by private companies these days

The likes of G4 call their  staff custody officers who are poorly paid and staffed which is why those prisons have more issues and fairly regularly call out support teams from HMP for support and quelling disturbances. Overall they arent that much cheaper due to the amount of repairs required.
