All depends where they are, I had one on my back and one on my neck, and my gp removed them within five minutes. All he did was numbed them and cut them out, Really painless.
Don't mess about with moles, if you are concerned at all about a mole, if it changes shape, itches or does anything at all to make you notice it, go see your GP immediately. If you want it removed for comsetic reasons, still go and talk to your gp.
The problem with having the moles removed surgically is that they often grow back. I've had several moles removed three times and they came back within a year or two. I've read that a concoction of castor oil and baking soda, covered by a bandaid, twice a day, will get rid of them, but I haven't tried it.
