Was listening to a chat show on the radio whilst driving home. Mostly about football with amusing stories thrown in. They were talking about stage shows and one said he had gone to see a production of Anne Frank which fell below usual standards and the lead wasn't very good. When the nazis arrived, someone in the audience shouted - "she's in the attic".

This led on to the other asking "What is the connection between Anne Frank and Matt Lucas?"  Co-presenter stumped, so he said Matt Lucas was in one of these "geniality" shows and a relative had stayed in Ann Frank's house.  Think he meant genealogy and I spluttered. Laughed all the way home.

This originally happened when actress Pia Zadora - not highly rated for her range - appeared in a stage adaptation of the Anne Frank story, and the audience were so disillusioned with the paucity of Ma Zadora's perforfance, that someone in the audience did indeed shout "She's in the attic!" when the plot reached the crucial stage.

Not beyond the bounds of possibility that the radio presenter was at that show.

To gild the lily

( also ascribed to Lisa Minelli) - - The first acts ends with an abortive Nazi raid, which obviously has to be acted out in the working ( factory) space of de Prinzengracht.

The audience shouted and pointed

Except that - if you read the Snopes link - Ms Zadora has not actually appeared in any production of the Anne Frank Story - the legend is apocryphal.

Apart from anything else - in truth, the Nazis knew exactly where the Frank family were - someone, to this day unidentfied, told the Nazis that the Franks and other families were hiding in the factory premises actic.

I thought she was arrested by Dutch ( collaborating) police but it was this guy

AH, thought I'd just mention that in the show I was listening to, the presenter did not mention any actress by name or indeed the year he had seen it.

Was it Off The Ball with Stuart and Tam, Maggie?

"The most petty and ill-informed football show on radio" 😊
