How often should you have to top-up your engine oil between services.....? My VH Meriva Design 1.6 8v is about three years old wih 28k miles. I travel about 160 miles a week. There are no visible oil-leaks. I also use Fully-Synthetic.

There are no hard and fast rules - just check weekly and top up when necessary. At that mileage you should not be using a significant amount.
modern cars can use up to a litre per 1000kms.
Your handbook normally tells you what the normal oil consumption shold be and also tells you what type of oil to use.
I agree with Birt. Engines are supposed to use a certain amount of oil and while we often hear about cars going many thousands of miles before needing topped up I would be more worried if it wasn't using oil.
1000km per litre may seem a bit on the high side but it will be well within manufacturers tolerances.
