The plug is one of those you press down once to close and then press again to open.

It's starting to block.  How do I clear it?

Can you get the plug off?

Question Author

If I did I might not be able to get it back on.

Haven't tried yet

Pop theplug up and use a plunger as normal after filling the basin with water. Block the overflow hole with a flannel whilst you plunge.

The plug should simply unscrew. Hold it between your fingers and turn it anti-clockwise. If it comes off you might discover a mass of hair etc which can be pulled out. Or you may need to pour some sink unblocker down the plughole. I had a rotary drain snake, which is a bit like a flexible curtain spring with a central wire which sticks out a brush at one end and has a handle on the other end. You feed this down the plug and encourage it to flex itself down past the trap. You must only turn the handle clockwise when inserting or removing, or the brush might unscrew itself from the central wire and be left in the waste pipe.

Mine worked well, but a year later the wire had rusted inside the outer sleeve and won't turn any more, although it could be used to simply push and pull.

Some good suggestions here.  I'll have a look at it in the morning.
