It is of course the effigy that is burned as a token of thanks for the foiled Plot.

Guy hmself escaped execution.

Along with his fellow consirators, he was waiting to be 'drawn and quartered' -the system was to hang the prisoner until he was half dead anyway, and then finish him off with disembowelment.

Guy cheated the executioners, as he was waiting with the noose still around his neck, he jumped off the ladder that was keeping him from hanging, and broke his own neck.

Why is Fawkes the one who gets all the publicity? He wasn't the main conspirator? The glamour of gunpowder?

Fawkes was indeed not the main architect of the Plot, but he was the one charged with actually lighting the fuse, so he was the one caught in the act, and obviously singled out as the man who was intent on killing the king and parliament, hence his infamy.
