I recently dropped my camcorder and have just received vouchers to replace it.
But which one should I go for???
I like the idea of recording straight to DVD, but I think best quality only allows for 20 minutes on a disc which means a lot of extra discs to carry. Also they seem to be awkward to edit.
Hard drive cameras look good, but what format do they record on? It does mean no extra storage to carry but it does mean a set length of recording.
dvd is a technology which works by the skin of its teeth at the best of times, and I'd advise against investing in the mini dvd form used in camcorders for the moment. You are correct that considerable compression is used and shorter playing time is the order of the day. ideally a hard drive model would be more reliable !
panasonic do generally decent camcorders with minDV. www.cnet.com have reviews i think.
