Question to the AB experts.. what would the net immigration total figures have been if the UK had stayed in the EU?

The number let in was not deliberate it happened though circumstances.  Students, health care workers and their families with continued fallout from Ukraine and Hong kong are amongst the biggest contributers.  I doubt they would be less or come from the EU.

In the year to June 2023, the top five non-EU nationalities were: Indian (253,000), Nigerian (141,000), Chinese (89,000), Pakistani (55,000) and Ukrainian (35,000). The figures for China are mainly from Hong Kong on humanitarian grounds, like those from Ukraine.

I doubt it'd be that different. The illegals are being let in anyway because a gutless parliament refuses to tear up, out of date HR related agreements. And some commercial concerns still claim they need immigrant labour when the truth is they probably don't have a business opportunity without the abuse of buying cheap labour in to short out the local labour market and compete with potential cheap imports. If the industries affected are important then it's the government's job to ensure an even playing field.

And yes, immigration has been Westminster's responsibility for some time now. One expects a period of transition but clearly there has been no sign of willingness to seriously tackle the issue. It's like the policy is to talk the talk, but not take a single step to walk the walk.
