Was thinking of getting plantation shutters for my house.
I think they should be just fine as they are but my husband thinks we should have heavy curtains as well to make it more cosy but that will take away the clean lines I'm after.
What do you folk think?

Ha ha Zacs, might come to that yet.
I think relationships are about finding compromises both can live with. Especially in matters of taste.

Just to be clear, this isn't about my relationship with my husband, it's in the home section, not relationships.

I'm just trying to establish weather its usual to have curtains with them or not.

Zacs reply was tongue in cheek and so was my answer to him.
Sorry Darcy, mischievousness got the better of me. Yes it is normal to have curtains with plantation blinds as they 'soften' the window. One persons 'clean lines' is another's 'cold hash edges'.
I should have said 'normal, but not compulsory'. All down to personal choice.

It's ok Zacs I knew you were only joking, I don't mind a bit of banter but think Old Geezer thought I had relationship problems. X
I would say that blinds cut out light and give privacy. However they don't do much to help thermal insulation, which is necessary in this country. I would side with hubby on this.

Ok, maybe we'll get plain white ones then. ha ha
In my last house had both shutters and curtains..was an old 150 + year old place so shutters looked appropriate, not so sure in a modern build...unless you live in a very sunny climate, curtains keep the place warm and cosy.

The decision between plantation shutters and heavy curtains depends on your personal preferences, the overall aesthetic you're aiming for, and the functional requirements of the space. Both options have their advantages, and it's essential to consider factors such as light control, privacy, aesthetics, and maintenance. Here are some considerations for each:

Plantation Shutters:

Clean Lines and Modern Look: Plantation shutters are known for their clean and modern appearance. They provide a timeless and sophisticated look that complements various interior styles.

Light Control: Plantation shutters offer excellent control over natural light. You can easily adjust the louvers to let in the desired amount of light while maintaining privacy.

Low Maintenance: They are relatively easy to clean and maintain compared to heavy curtains, making them a practical choice for busy households.

Heavy Curtains:

Cozy and Warm Feel: Heavy curtains can add a sense of coziness and warmth to a room. They provide additional insulation, making them suitable for colder climates.

Versatility in Style: Curtains come in a wide range of fabrics, patterns, and colors, allowing for greater versatility in achieving specific styles or themes.

Sound Insulation: Thick curtains can provide some level of sound insulation, which might be a consideration depending on the location of your home.

Balancing Both:

Layered Look: If you want a combination of both, consider a layered look. You can install plantation shutters for practical reasons and add lighter, sheer curtains for a softer aesthetic.

Functional Zones: In some cases, homeowners use both options in different areas of the home. For example, you might opt for plantation shutters in common areas and heavy curtains in bedrooms for a cozy and private feel.

Ultimately, the choice between plantation shutters and heavy curtains is a personal one. It may be helpful to discuss your priorities and preferences with your husband to find a solution that satisfies both your desire for clean lines and his preference for a cozy atmosphere. You could also experiment with virtual design tools or consult with an interior designer for personalized advice based on your specific home and style preferences.
