For context, I'm reading a book of 1970s articles by Jilly Cooper. The sentence is about adulterous couples "hiding behind the celery and gristicks" in restaurants 🤔
I'm sure that TW has the right answer. (I could picture the things in my mind but I didn't know what they're called).
Interestingly though (in my opinion, at least), the grissini that Italians actually call 'Gristicks' aren't as thin as regular grissini are:
