I saw my very first urban fox last night in york city centre. Do you have many foxes near you?.
// I saw one nearly kill a cat //
that would be pretty unusual. we've put food out for foxes but had to tent-peg the bowls down because otherwise the vixen would steal them. on occasion a cat will get to the food first; the fox goes to chase it off but all puss needs to do is wave its paw and the fox backs off. cats are armed and although the fox would probably win, it wouldn't be without risk of serious injury for the fox. A fox cannot afford to be injured, if it can be avoided.
Canary, I'm a country person who loves foxes. Don't mix up countryfolk with The Countryside Alliance folk.
We have foxes around us and rarely see them. They have plenty to eat in the countryside around. During a very harsh winter, with snow continuing into Spring, we lost our blind cat to a fox, who came back the next night for our other cat who fought her off, but suffered with pussy PTSD for a good while! Whilst we were upset, we thought foxy might be trying to feed her litter of cubs, so we bore no malice.
The problem with foxes in towns is that people started to feed them and they have now got to trust humans and are sometimes almost domesticated which is dangerous for the foxes because many humans are nasty and cruel.
I'd be tempted to feed them as well!
